Structure of a family type name in Revit
One product model can contain several product types (variants), e.g. for the available diameters of a pipe accessory. The types are named so that:
- The type name together with the product model name gives a unique identification of the product.
- The type name has no or minimal duplication with the product model name.
- The type name does not contain values that can vary per instance of the type.
- The type name is no longer than necessary.
Type names are not intended to be used as a description in schedules. For that, the parameter values are used.
Structure of the name The type name is constructed of the value of some key parameters, separated by an ‘_’.
<TypeParameter1Value>_<TypeParameter2Value>_<TypeParameter3Value>_....
Normally, one or two parameter values are enough to define the type name.
- When a product model only has one type, the type name is equal to the value of the Article Type parameter.
- Product types are named as specified in the manufacturer documentation. Within a type name, spaces and special characters as ‘-‘ are allowed.
- When the type name contains a combination of dimension parameters, like length or width, these parameters may be separated by an ‘x’ instead of an ‘_’, for example 500x400.
- The product model name and parts of it are not duplicated in the product type names, except in some cases for the Series/Type part. Examples of exceptions:
- When manufacturers include the series name in the name of a product.
- When the Series/Type field in the product model name contains information about the included products from the series.
- The type name only shows values of the key type parameters that make a type unique. It doesn’t include values of type parameters that are not relevant for selecting a type.
- Language dependent type names are avoided as much as possible. Example In this example the family type name only consists of the parameter Article Type, that stores the type of the boiler.
