COBie.Component.TagNumber -- Expected Values
The COBie.Component.TagNumber parameter provides the physical asset
tag or label identifier assigned to a component.\
This value links the digital model to the actual tagged asset in the
building, enabling accurate maintenance, inspection, repair, and FM
workflows.
Tag numbers are typically applied by the contractor or commissioning team and must reflect the real identification visible on the installed equipment.
Validation Rules (DAQS)
-
Mandatory where asset tags are required\ Any component that receives a physical label, barcode, QR code, or asset sticker shall have a corresponding TagNumber.
-
Allowed characters
- Letters (A--Z)\
- Numbers (0--9)\
- Hyphens
-\ - Underscores
_\ - Periods
.\ - Manufacturer/contractor tag formats are permitted as long as they follow project conventions.
-
Format flexibility\ TagNumber may include structured codes such as:
- System-based tagging\
- Equipment hierarchy codes\
- FM system asset IDs
Examples:
MECH-01-PR-04,ASSET_22319,LGT.204-A -
No placeholders\ The following are not accepted:\
N/A,UNKNOWN,---,TEMP,TBD, or blank values for assets that must be tagged. -
Uniqueness requirement\ Tag numbers must be unique within the project, unless explicitly defined otherwise in the BEP.
-
Consistency with physical labels\ The TagNumber shall exactly match the identifier printed on the physical tag applied to the component.
-
Responsibility\ Contractors or commissioning teams assign TagNumbers.\ Designers shall not guess or pre-fill these values.
Good Examples
Component Type Valid COBie.Component.TagNumber Example
Pump PMP-01-004
Fan Coil Unit FCU-L02-17
Lighting Fixture LGT.2.45-A
Electrical Panel DB-M1-LG01
Sensor SNSR_2041
Common Mistakes
Incorrect Value Issue
Pump 01 Descriptive; not a structured tag
TBD Placeholder; not permitted
12345 Generic number; not a real tag unless confirmed
Empty Missing required asset identification
See drawings External reference; not allowed
Relationship to Revit
Autodesk's COBie Extension typically maps this from:\ Revit → Instance Parameter "Tag Number"\ (or the equivalent shared parameter in the COBie template).
Important notes: - TagNumbers shall be assigned after installation or during commissioning.\ - Instance parameters must be used; Type parameters are not acceptable.\ - The value must match O&M manuals, labels, and FM system data.
Best Practices
- Apply TagNumbers in alignment with the project's asset tagging strategy.\
- Avoid multiple formats---use one consistent structure across the discipline.\
- Double-check that digital tags match physical labels on installed equipment.\
- Validate TagNumbers before COBie export to ensure correct formatting and uniqueness.\
- Maintain a master asset register linking TagNumbers to serial numbers and locations.
