COBie.Component.Space -- Expected Values
The COBie.Component.Space parameter identifies the space or room in
which a component is located.\
This value links each asset instance to a spatial container, ensuring
correct placement within the COBie dataset and enabling Facility
Management systems to understand where equipment is installed.
If this field is empty, inconsistent, or incorrectly populated, COBie imports cannot correctly associate components with spaces, causing navigation, maintenance, and asset queries to fail.
Validation Rules (DAQS)
-
Value must exist for space-associated assets\ Components located within a room or space must reference a valid Space Name.\ Components outside spatial boundaries (e.g., site elements, shafts, external equipment) may be exempt if defined in the Responsibility Matrix.
-
Must match a valid
COBie.Space.Namevalue\ The value must exactly correspond to a space name defined in the COBie Space sheet.\ No deviations or descriptive labels are allowed. -
Allowed characters\ Letters (A--Z), numbers (0--9), underscores
_, hyphens-, and periods.\ No spaces, slashes, or symbols. -
Spatial consistency\ The component's physical location in the model shall fall within the referenced space volume.\ DAQS may flag mismatches where the geometric position violates this rule.
-
Data source consistency\ Revit Room Number / Name → must map consistently to COBie.Space.Name.\ Multi-room assets (e.g., systems spanning multiple spaces) shall use the space where the component is physically installed.
Good Examples
| Revit Space Identifier | Valid COBie.Component.Space Value |
|---|---|
Room 01.12 |
01.12 |
Technical Room B1_023 |
B1_023 |
Office L2-045 |
L2-045 |
These values must exactly match COBie.Space.Name.
Common Mistakes
| Incorrect Value | Issue |
|---|---|
Room 101 |
Descriptive text; does not match space name |
Technical Room |
Space name, not a valid identifier |
1.12 (office) |
Contains spaces and parentheses |
| Empty | Missing spatial reference |
Level 01 |
Floor identifier, not a space |
Relationship to Revit
Autodesk's COBie Extension typically maps COBie.Component.Space from
the Revit Room Number or combined Room Number + Name.
For correct mapping: - The component must have a valid room relationship.\ - Room Bounding must be enabled.\ - The room must be placed and fully enclosed.
If the room association is missing, the COBie extension cannot populate
COBie.Component.Space.
Best Practices
- Maintain a stable space naming convention throughout the project.
- Ensure room-bounding elements are correctly modelled.
- Regularly validate:
- Components outside room volumes\
- Incorrect or missing room numbers\
- Multi-level or open spaces that require explicit modelling\
- Align space naming with the BEP and client asset registers.
- Avoid renaming spaces late in the project to maintain COBie consistency.
