COBie.Facility.Name – Expected Values

The COBie.Facility.Name parameter must contain a short, unique identifier for the entire facility (building, block, structure, or infrastructure element). This value appears in the COBie Facility worksheet and is referenced by Floor, Space, Component, System, and others.

If this value is missing or inconsistent, COBie data becomes unreliable and cross-references break.

πŸ”‘ What Values Should You Expect?

  • A short alphanumeric identifier for the building or site
  • Typically matches the project name or building code
  • No spaces (use underscores or hyphens if needed)
  • Must be consistent across the COBie spreadsheet and Revit model

βœ… Good Examples

Project Type Suggested COBie.Facility.Name Value
Single Building BuildingA, MainHQ
Multi-building Site Campus_East, Site42_BuildingB
Hospital Project GH_Amsterdam
Infrastructure Project Station_UtrechtCS, Bridge_077

❌ Common Mistakes (and Why They Break COBie)

Bad Value Issue
Main Building Contains spaces β†’ breaks cross-sheet references
gebouw a Not an identifier; inconsistent formatting
Project X / Building A Illegal characters (/, space)
Empty or missing Facility sheet incomplete β†’ invalid dataset
Very long names Hard to read, inconsistent with COBie conventions

πŸ” Where Revit Gets This Value

Autodesk’s COBie Extension sets COBie.Facility.Name based on:

Manage β†’ Project Information β†’ Project Name

If users change one but not the other, the export becomes inconsistent. Setting this value early and keeping it fixed avoids that problem.

πŸ” Where Is This Value Used?

  • In the Facility worksheet of the COBie spreadsheet
  • As a reference in Floor, Space, Asset, and other worksheets

🧠 Best Practices

  • Define the Facility.Name in the BIM Execution Plan / Information Protocol
  • Choose a code that will not change halfway through the project
  • Keep it short, stable, and machine-friendly
  • Match the naming used by the client’s asset register
  • Avoid accents, symbols, and whitespace
  • Freeze the value as soon as COBie deliverables start
